Bowling for Context
24hr Laundromat / Bowling Alley
Professor Vincent Snyder / University of Texas at Austin
Program: Laundry and a bowling in a developing mixed-use district near UT campus. Emphasis on Contextualism encourages historic, zoning, and spatial analysis.
Construction: 20’ structural grid and 4’ module are rigidly enforced for construction and coordination .
Sustainability: The exterior shading system reduces the heat load, and is detailed for interchangeability. Heat generated by the laundromat vents air from the shaded operable windows through the skylight above.
Form: Taking cues from the nostalgia of 60’s graphic design, the “big-box” is wrapped in a permeable skin.
Studio: Sound Building Studio is unique to the curriculum at the UT at Austin. Students are expected to coordinate design studio with structure and systems seminars.
